A Part of Our Mindset Series
One of my favorite poems, one that often inspires me to go out on a limb, is ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
His prose reminds me that in all things we always have a choice…good, bad, or otherwise. Just like your friend may remind you while sharing your woes and sipping your coffee.
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
We don’t know what lies ahead regardless of which way we choose. The “safe” path can become the most treacherous. Although, sometimes deep inside there is this little voice. And that friend who has a knack for seeing the bright side of every catastrophe who loves to amplify that little voice.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
Our boundary-pushing friend and that little voice inside encourage us to get curious. Try something new. Lead a life worth living. Go on an adventure. Blaze a trail. Leave a legacy.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
While no adventure is without its own unique challenges…the hike up the mountain that was exhilarating followed by the repelling mishap where your hair gets caught in the D-ring and your friend has to repel down next to you and cut your hair…each promises an experience meant for you and you alone.
If we choose to embrace openness, curiosity, and flexibility while also challenging stagnation and mediocrity…then we just might live the most incredible life.
May you grow to become the person you always wanted to be and embrace the possibilities.
Which did you choose? Let me know here.
