Lights, Camera, Action: Unleashing Your Inner Leading Lady

What Hollywood and Kate Winslet taught me about being a leading lady

Who comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Leading Lady?”

For me, a few women immediately take center stage: Vivien Leigh, Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis, Diane Keaton, Maya Angelou, and Kate Winslet.

This isn’t an exhaustive list—just the faces that instantly light up my mental marquee.

What makes them leading ladies??

Is it their graceful confidence, their strong sense of self, or their awareness of their own value and worth? Perhaps it’s their approachable yet formidable refinement, or that magnetic essence that captures your attention?

Are they women you could converse with until dawn, never tiring of their voice or the stories they share?

Do they awaken something within you that you didn’t realize existed, leaving you craving more—another scene, another story, another book, another moment in time?

It’s likely all of this and more.

There is a certain je ne sais quoi about them.

And it is palpable.

In “Gone With the Wind,” Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett was as captivating to the audience as she was frustrating to her suitors. Undaunted by the Civil War’s turmoil, she showed us that resilience is a superpower.

Jackie Kennedy, the queen of Camelot, continues to inspire the world of fashion and women everywhere. Her iconic style—Jackie O. sunglasses and Hermes scarves—speaks volumes.

Diane Keaton has graced us with unforgettable roles throughout her career, proving that we can be serious and soulful or fun and quirky—and be utterly enchanting in every incarnation.

Maya Angelou—dancer, singer, activist, poet, and scholar—led an inspiring life. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she showed us how to gracefully overcome obstacles and rise above adversity.

Kate Winslet may forever be the beautiful Rose who survived the Titanic’s tragedy for some. For others, she’s the loveable Iris in “The Holiday.” Her performances embody humility and vulnerability, touching our hearts in profound ways.

The Moment of Truth

In “The Holiday,” there’s an unforgettable scene where Arthur and Iris discuss great movies, defining moments, and lead roles—especially those of leading ladies.

Arthur shares stories of his industry experiences, meeting his wife, and his writing journey. He reveals that he always fashioned his leading ladies after his wife—the love of his life.

With loving kindness and curiosity, Arthur asks Iris why she’s playing the best friend in her own life rather than embracing the lead role. This question hits her like a spotlight, and she exclaims, “I should be a leading lady in my own life!”

What role were you meant to play?

It’s time to step out of the wings and into the spotlight of your own life. Every woman has the potential to be a leading lady—in her career, her relationships, and her personal growth journey.
